SIDE GAMES

BEST BALL GREENSOME
In this format, two partners both drive and then select the best drive from which to hit the second shot. The drive that is not selected is that of the partner who hits the second shot, and the partners alternate hitting the shots until the ball is holed out. This same format is used on all subsequent holes. One-half of the team‘s total handicap is used to derive a net score or, if involved in a match format, the handicap strokes are applied where they fall on the scorecard.

BEST BALL GRUESOME
In this game, one twosome plays against another twosome; the opposing twosome selects which drive of the other twosome is to be played, naturally choosing the worst drive. Once the drives have been selected, each player of the twosome plays out the hole. This game can be played as either the best ball of the twosome or the total score of the twosome.

BEST BALL BLOODSOME
In this twosome game, both partners hit their tee shots, and the opposing twosome selects which shot of the two will be played for the second shot. As in Best Ball Gruesome the opposing twosome naturally selects the worst drive, and the player whose drive was not selected hits the second shot. Play then proceeds, with each partner hitting or putting alternately until the ball is holed out. In this game the best ball wins the hole.

BEST BALL FENSOME
In this twosome game both partners drive and then select the best drive from which to hit their second shot. However, in the Fensome format, one player hits all the second shots on the odd-numbered holes while the other player hits all the second shots on the even-numbered holes, regardless of whose drive was selected. After the second shot has been played, the partners then alternate shots or putts until the ball is holed out. One-half the team’s total handicap is used to determine a net score or, if in a match format, the handicap strokes are applied where they fall on the scorecard.

BEST BALL RYDER CUP
In this format each team consists of two players, with each player driving on either all the odd-numbered holes or the even-numbered holes. The player who does not drive is the player who hits the second shot, and the players alternate hitting the shots or putting the ball until is holed out. This is the format that the pros play, and therefore it is a format best suited for good players, mainly because of the demands placed upon the player driving the ball.

“The most exquisitely satisfying act in the world of golf is that of throwing a club. The full backswing, the delayed wrist action, the flowing follow-through, followed by that unique whirring sound, reminiscent only of a passing flock of starlings, are without parallel in sport.“
— Henry Longhurst
